In what was otherwise a quiet weekend for motor sports, Joey Logano made the loudest statement when he beat teammate Kyle Busch to the checkered flag in Nashville on Saturday. The win was the 18 years old’s first of the year and the second of his career in the NASCAR Nationwide Series. Logano took the lead with just nine laps to go after battling back and forth with Busch for several laps.
The two Joe Gibbs teammates led a combined 172 of the races 225 laps and left nearest competitors Brad Keselowski, Kelly Bires, and Carl Edwards in their dust. Edwards, who is currently leading the series points, was the only other driver who led a significant number of laps with 45 to his credit.
Edwards’ point lead was reduced slightly by Kyle Busch. He is now only 23 points behind Edwards after six races. “[The team] did a great job and it was just a shame we weren’t able to get out there and win this thing. That’s kind of frustrating, but we finished second”, Busch said during post race interviews.
Logano performance earned him one of the sport’s most coveted trophies, a Gibson guitar that is illustrated by noted NASCAR artist Sam Bass. ” It was awesome to be able to get that win this time.” Logano said, “Ever since I’ve been coming to Nashville I’ve been wanting to win that guitar and this is just awesome.”
Rounding out the top ten were Jason Leffler, David Ragan, Mike Bliss, Steve Wallace and Scott Lagasse Jr.
