Lowes Announces Big Money Legend Race!
Story and photos by: Drew Hierwarter
Earlier in the week I wrote in this space about Legend Cars and I mentioned that they raced on just about every kind of track, including NHRA drag strips for 2010. Well, on Wednesday of this week officials of Lowes Motor Speedway in Charlotte, North Carolina shook up the entire Legend Car community with their announcement of a huge event for the diminutive cars.
For the past several years Lowes has been running a race series for Legend Cars on a specially designed quarter mile oval that uses part of the pit lane and part of the front stretch of the big speedway. The weeknight races have been hugely popular with local racers and fans alike.
Well, the announcement that came down on Wednesday was that on the weekend of July 15 – 17, 2010, Lowes Motor Speedway will host a Legend Car race with a one million dollar purse! That’s $1,000,000.00! Many of the details are yet to be worked out but they expect the winner’s share of the purse to be $200,000.00!
As you might expect this has, and will continue to have, a tremendous effect on everybody who owns a Legend Car, or is thinking about getting into Legend Car racing, or is racing in some other division and will put a Legend Car effort together just for this event.
Already there are ads on eBay and other web sites for used Legend Cars and even cars for rent that are being touted as “. . .perfect for the million dollar race at Lowes!” Officials are not sure how many cars will show up for this but some estimates put the entries as high as a couple of hundred cars.
No matter how many eventually show up, this is sure to be a major event with competitors from all over the country ready to take a shot at winning that big purse.
